If it weren't for the diamond 9 in the dummy, I believe we would beat this but as it is we cannot establish a second diamond trick by starting them from either side.

So.

As to my double, I figure after the XX, partner expects me to do something. I almost got it right and passed, but nope.

Partner, I guess, knows my hand more or less exactly. I would have bid a major over 1D if I had one instead of 1NT, so I have a minor fit for him. Probably clubs, since at the time I doubled I can easily read partner for at least four diamonds and would probably have bid 3D if I fit them. Still, 3C can and probably will go down one, and if it hadn't been for the 9 of diamonds we would have beaten 2S.


We got -12 imps.

My thoughts are

I would have passed out the North hand in 4th seat unless I could open 1NT (weak).

At IMPS I would let them be in 2S on the South hand to avoid a disaster unless I was very confident in partner's judgement. I agree the double should be this sort of hand but I don't think pass is forcing by North. If 2S is one off how bad can that be, and partner could have competed in a minor if he felt that was right over 2S, since he knew you had 7 + cards in the minors.

Don't double 2S at IMPs, unless you are SURE.

At MPs, it would be a marginal double. I wouldn't do it, but wouldn't sriticize it either.

I do not like the opening bid so much and would have tossed it in. Your side opened the bidding and now made a close dble with no place to go. Wy anyone would dble a partscore for a 1 trick set at imps escapes my understanding.

I guess I pretty much agree with the criticism of my final double. Recently I have had a couple of similar hands where at the end I found that the opponents had robbed me blind so I decided that I wasn't going quietly this time. I guess you could say I didn't go quietly.

Passing does seem to give opponents an unlocked door for theft, but -12 is not a pleasant experience.

Thanks, I'll take the criticism to heart. I may also use it to defend myself the next time I pass it out for a bad score.

1) opening lightish in second seat you have an easy pass in fourth seat

I understand the dislike of the final double, but why dis the redouble? I have an opportunity to show I am at the top of my 1NT bid, why not do it? Partner doesn't have to have a flattish 12 count. These balance doubles of 1NT often find no one with any fit (a sort of corollary to "if one side has a fit, the other side probably does" is "if we don't, they probably don't") and if partner has, say, a 14 count then let the doubling begin.

But I do accept the criticism of the final double. Partner knows my hand, has said "not interested", so let it be.

I'll listen about the XX, but that one still seems right to me.

Also, N cannot bid 2C over the balancing double, only 3C over the 2S response to the balancing double. Certainly without the XX that would be suicidal.

I like the XX, but the X of 2 Spade was a crime.
But maybe the biggest crime had been the 4 seat opening without points and majors....

After 1NT, the imp bid imo is 2♣, not pass (the MP bid). This is one of the reasons why you better open 1♦ with 4-4m. From that moment it's going downhill, since opener didn't describe his hand well enough.

Btw, I wouldn't open the North hand in 4th seat...

Opening 1♦ with west's hand is also quite silly, you don't have a single trick and you don't want partner to lead ♦... 1♠ would be a lot better imo.
