3 was, and should be a splinter, and looks like a very good bid to me. In other words, game forcing values, club support, singleton heart.

I'll say that you should pass the double of 4, and not say anything more.

3 seems like a descriptive bid. Singleton or void, big club support, at least game forcing. NS bid like lunatics and should have been punished by conceding the 1700 4X would have cost (4 rounds of trumps which is pretty standard defence). 1 heart, 1 spade and 1 club for declarer.

Respect your partner's double. He knows what you have, and it will not be a big shock for him to find you with 5-card club support since your 1 opening can be short. The German world class player, Michael Elinescu (ELMICH), says it clearly in his profile:

"Do not remove my penalty doubles". Luis Argerich from Argentina (lrargerich), also a top class player, has something similar in his.

i honestly don't know what 3 is... the good players can tell mw why it isn't (or can't be) a fit jump or even a weak j/s

Because RHO has shown both majors. Even if there had been no intervention, 3 should be a splinter for clubs. You have 1 and 2 available as natural and forcing. If you play weak jump shifts, you have 1.

Wouldn't it be illogical to let 3 be natural when one opponent has shown at least 5 cards in that suit?

3H should show a singleton or void heart and a big club fit.

(As a slight side point, it would be dangerous to respond 3H after RHO's pass, because not everyone plays this as a splinter, some play it as a pre-empt. Roland's arguments as to why it shouldn't be are all correct, but that doesn't stop other people playing things differently)

Having splintered, it is clear to pass partner's double of 4H.
